Obituary of Robert J. Bemis
ROBERT J. BEMIS
LATHAM - Robert J. Bemis, a devoted husband, father, and artist, passed away suddenly on March 28th, 2025, leaving behind a legacy of kindness, service, and creativity.
Born on January 13, 1972, at Malmstrom Air Force Base in Great Falls, Montana, Rob was the son of Lt. John R. Bemis, USAF, and Janice A. (Lemire) Bemis. As a child of a military family, he lived in 13 different places across the United States, with his first flight at just three months old, traveling from Montana to Boston. His early years were spent moving frequently, including time in Nebraska, Kansas, and Massachusetts, where his family ultimately settled in Worcester.
Rob embraced the values of the Boy Scouts of America from a young age, earning the rank of Eagle Scout in 1990 as a member of Troop 37, Mohegan Council. His dedication to service was evident throughout his youth—whether confronting a burglar at age 15, assisting a pedestrian hit by a car while on his newspaper route, or working as a lifeguard, where his lifesaving efforts earned him a Key to the City.
A graduate of South High School in Worcester (Class of 1990), Rob pursued his passion for the arts, earning degrees from the University of Bridgeport, CT, and Quinsigamond Community College. In 1998 he began a long and dedicated career with Home Depot, working there for 27 years.
Beyond his professional life, Rob was a gifted fiber artist, showcasing his intricate works in both local and national exhibits. His passion for creativity extended to his love of games, and he enjoyed spending time playing Magic: The Gathering at local shops. Throughout his life, he remained true to the Scout Law and Oath, embodying loyalty, kindness, and integrity in everything he did.
Rob is survived by his beloved wife of 12 years, Keenya Oliver Bemis, and their cherished daughter, Rowan Olivia Bemis. He also leaves behind his parents, John and Janice Bemis of Waterford, NY; his brothers, Russell Bemis and his wife Erica of Millbury, MA, along with their son Paul; and Andrew Bemis, Lt. Col., USAF (Ret.), and his wife Nina Salazar Bemis, along with their children Jackson, Amelia, and David.
He was preceded in death by his mother-in-law, Hope Oliver, and is also survived by his father-in-law, The Honorable Judge Eugene Oliver Jr., and stepmother-in-law, Sharlene Brown Oliver of the Bronx, NY, as well as many beloved aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, and nephews.
Rob will be remembered for his generosity, his artistry, and his unwavering commitment to helping others. He lived a life of service, creativity, and love, leaving an indelible mark on all who knew him.
