Obituary of Margaret M. Ethier
MARGARET M. ETHIER
LATHAM - Margaret M. Ethier, 84 of Latham, passed away in the early morning hours of Wednesday, April 2, 2025 at The Eddy Village Green at Beverwyck, in Slingerlands.
Peggy, as she was fondly known by all, was born on December 9, 1940 in Troy, NY, the daughter of the late Emil S. and Margaret K. (Markham) Bartle. She attended Sacred Heart School, Catholic Central High School and graduated from Holy Names Academy. She received her bachelor's degree from The College of Saint Rose in Albany, NY, and her master's degree from Russell Sage College in Troy, NY. She taught at several different schools in Watervliet, Cohoes and Troy over the years. In 1980 she began employment as a supervisor at the NYS Dept of Health & Human Services and worked there until her retirement in 2003.
Known for her commitment to the church and her kind and generous spirit, Peggy was a dedicated parishioner of several local parishes, spending her final years where she began at Sacred Heart Church in Troy. She was involved with a number of church organizations including St. Vincent de Paul Society at St. Ambrose Church in Latham, Troy Ladies of Charity, Eucharistic Adoration Society at St. Augustine's in Lansingburgh, and the Sacred Heart Rosary Group. In addition to her dedication to the church, Peggy will be remembered for her independent spirit and her love of celebrations of any kind, especially if they included music, dancing, and cake. She never met a stranger, would give anything she had to anyone in need, and then invite them over for the holidays.
Peggy is survived by her three children and their spouses, Kathleen Ethier and Sarah Coleman, Sheila and Tony Lorello, and Med and Diane Ethier. She is also survived by her sisters Nancy (Ed) Crosson, Susan Thuillez, and Deborah (Barry) Cox, her brother, Robert Bartle and much loved nieces and nephews. Peggy adored being a grandmother and was devoted to her six grandchildren, Ashley (Shane) Lay, Katherine Lorello, Michael Lorello, Margaret Ethier, Anna Ethier, and Matthew Ethier.
The family would like to thank the caring staff at Eddy Hawthorne Ridge and the Eddy Village Green at Beverwyck where Peggy spent the last years of her life. We would especially like to express our immense gratitude to Jean and Sophia who treated Peggy like a member of their family. They are both special people who our mother loved. Lastly, we would like to give special thanks to our Aunt Debby who went "above and beyond" to look after Peggy for many years. We love you very much.
