Obituary of Ronald S. Harvey

RONALD S. HARVEY

LATHAM - Ronald S. Harvey, 82, of Latham, NY passed away peacefully, on November 17, 2025 at his winter home in Naples, FL leaving behind a legacy of resilience, intellect, humor, and unwavering loyalty—to his family, his friends, his work, and, perhaps most famously, his beloved Boston Red Sox.

Born with a small stature and spinal curvature, Ron never allowed physical challenges to define him. As a boy, he was remarkably fast on his feet and possessed a powerful throwing arm, quickly becoming a star on his Little League baseball team. In high school, he excelled as a sprinter on the track team, competing in the dash events. His drive, determination, and athletic mindset were lifelong trademarks.

Ron attended the University of Massachusetts Amherst, earning a degree in Economics and continuing into graduate studies. While there, he received an offer to join the State of New York—a decision that launched a distinguished career spanning his entire professional life. Ron became a respected economist with New York's Budget Division and later the Department of Environmental Conservation, where he developed extensive expertise in energy systems and regulatory policy. He was frequently called upon to testify as an expert witness in major state energy cases, known for his sharp analytical mind, unwavering honesty, and common-sense approach. His work in the pivotal energy matters of the 1970s and 1980s helped shape the state's long-term policies, steering New York away from costly and environmentally unsound projects. His colleagues remembered him as insightful, principled, and consistently on the mark.

In midlife, Ron faced one of his greatest challenges when he was diagnosed with Crohn's disease—a severe case that nearly took his life and required the removal of a significant portion of his intestines. Even with the limitations imposed by the disease, Ron refused to slow down. He remained active, playing tennis and golf, and ultimately discovering a passion for contract bridge. True to form, he didn't just play—he excelled—eventually becoming a nationally recognized and highly ranked bridge competitor.

Ron's personality was as memorable as his accomplishments. He was genuinely kind, friendly, and armed with a delightfully warped sense of humor. His sharp wit and deep reservoir of stories made him a favorite among friends and colleagues. And through it all, there were the Red Sox—his lifelong, often exasperating devotion. He endured decades of heartbreak with the team, and even after their historic 2004 World Series victory, he joked that the joy never fully made up for the suffering of earlier years.

Friendships mattered deeply to Ron. Even when life pulled people in different directions, conversations with him could pick up instantly—as if they had never paused at all. Those who knew him best cherished this rare gift.

Ron is survived by his wife, Karen Gardiner-Harvey; his son, Jordan Harvey and his brother, David Harvey as well as stepchildren Christopher (Kathleen) Gardiner, Sr., and grandchildren Christopher Gardiner, Michael Gardiner, and Kate Gardiner. Also survived by his five great-grandchildren Alexander, Benjamin, Christopher III, Grace, and Ethan. He will be remembered for his brilliance, his humor, his perseverance, and the tremendous heart he shared with those fortunate enough to know him.
