Obituary of Edward Huba
Please share a memory of Edward to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Latham- Edward D. Huba, 93, died peacefully at the Stratton V. A. Hospital on August 4, 2009 after a brief hospitalization. He was the son of the late William Huba and Mary Bigley Huba, and he resided in Albany all his life.
Ed was a U. S. Army, WW II veteran who served in the 27th Infantry Division for over four and a half years, three of which were in the Pacific theater. He was honorably discharged as a sergeant. Ed was the recipient of the American Defense Service Medal and the Asiatic Pacific Service Medal, and was awarded the Purple Heart and the Bronze Star for valor at the battle of Saipan. He was a lifelong member of the DAV and an advocate for veterans' rights.
Ed was a retired federal government employee who worked for the Veterans Administration Adjudication Department and the U. S. Department of the Army, Schenectady Depot. He also worked for the New York State Department of Motor Vehicles as supervisor of the registration records section.
Ed was an avid golfer who played the game until he was 80. He developed his love for the sport as a youth, caddying at the Albany Country Club beginning in 1925 at the age of nine. His fondest memories were of the Albany Municipal Golf Course, now known as Capital Hills, where he played his entire adult life. He was among the first to play the course in 1931, and he was present for its dedication in 1932. His collection of pictures and facts about course history earned him the unofficial title "course historian" by the New York Golf Magazine in 1998. He won the Fourth Annual Times Union hole-in-one contest at "Muni" in 1958.
Ed was predeceased by his wife of 61years, Eleanor Du Bois Huba; his brothers Harold, Walter, Joseph, and Raymond Huba; and his sisters Gertrude Masse and Delores Huba. He is survived by his daughters Dr. Mary Huba (Dr. George Miller) and Christine Van Dyne (Dr. Willis Van Dyne). He was the beloved grandfather of Michael Van Dyne, Sarah Miller, and Laura Miller. He is also survived by his brothers Albert Huba, Robert Huba (Helen), and his sister Mary Blessing, as well as several generations of nieces and nephews.
Ed taught his family through quiet example the values of honor, duty, and selflessness. His children and grandchildren consider these lessons to be his finest legacy. He will never be forgotten.
We owe our deepest gratitude to Dr. Julie Philips of the V. A. Hospital, a skilled physician and compassionate healer, who provided unparalleled care for Ed until his passing. We thank the members of the Silver Team, especially Joyce Williams, R. N., who unfailingly brightened Ed's visits with her warm smile and positive attitude. We also acknowledge the caring staff of the Heroes Way hospice unit. Finally, we thank the staff and residents of Beltrone Living Center for their kindness and support throughout the years, especially after our mother's death.
In keeping with Ed's wishes there will be no visitation and services will be private.
Internment in St. Agnes Cemetery in Menands.
