FRANCIS J. CARROLL
Clifton Park- Francis J. Carroll, 83 of Clifton Park, New York died February 13th after a brief illness.
Born in Brandon, Vermont in 1926, he was the son of Francis J. Carroll and Frances Traynor. He was raised in Albany, New York along with his sister, Loretta by his mother and stepfather Richard Page.
In 1944, Mr. Carroll joined the Navy immediately after graduating from Albany High School. He served as a Boatswain's Mate 2nd Class aboard the USS Lumen He saw combat as part of the battle of Okinawa, the largest amphibious assault in the Pacific Theater in World War II. At the end of the war his ship ferried men and supplies to the US troops occupying the Philippines and Japan. Mr. Carroll was present when, after the formal surrender of the Japanese, President Truman personally cited the crew of the Lumen for their contributions to winning the war.
Upon his return from service in 1946, Mr. Carroll attended and graduated from Siena College and then pursued and received a J.D. degree from New York Law School.
He began his legal career as an associate with E. Stewart Jones in Troy, New York. In the late 1960's he started his own firm at 39 1st Street in Troy where he practiced as a general trial lawyer until retiring in 1998. The scope of his practice spanned many areas, civil and criminal, and over the course of his career he argued cases up to the New York State Court of Appeals and the United States Court of Appeals.
Mr. Carroll was active in local politics and civic organizations and served for many years as a member and officer of the Troy Club.
He was also an avid outdoorsman and fisherman, history and archeology buff, and a passionate lifelong supporter of the New York Giants football team.
He is survived by his three sons and their families: Dr. Brion P. Carroll of Providence, Rhode Island, Marcus R. Carroll, his wife Cindy and their sons Brendon and Benjamin of Bedford, Massachusetts, and James S. Carroll and his wife Heather of Sherborn, Massachusetts.
A funeral service with full military honors and private burial will be held on February 18th at the Gerald B.H. Solomon Saratoga National Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the American Legion Legacy Scholarship Fund which supports higher education for children whose parents have been killed in military service.
