Thomas Lamparski posted a condolence
Sunday, September 15, 2024
I was shocked and saddened to hear of the sudden passing of my workmate, Tom Van Etten.
I had the great pleasure of working with Tom throughout my years in the NNL Reactor Safety community. Tom was an integral part of that tightly knit community. His expertise in reactor safety analysis was well-known and respected throughout the program, and I benefited from that expertise in many time-critical situations.
I, along with his teammates, also knew him for several other of his positive traits: His gentle and friendly demeanor, his outreach to provide effective mentorship to our more junior personnel, and, of course, his daily lunchtime walking regime that he stuck to sun, wind, rain, sleet, or snow.
My heartfelt condolences go out to his friends and his family. His passing is truly a loss to all of us.
Thomas Lamparski, retired
Manager, Reactor Safety
Naval Nuclear Laboratory

Tom was my brother and he was always so helpful and kind. Always willing to help me out when I needed it. He also checked on me frequently When I lived in Albany alone. Tom loved hiking and camping and I always enjoyed seeing his videos and hearing his stories. My sincerest condolences to Eileen and Alice. Tom may be gone, but his memory isn’t.
Mom and I love & miss you and hope you’re hiking the hills of Heaven.

Such a shock to lose my brother Tom. I pray for comfort for Eileen and Alice. I do know that Tom died doing something he loved. I felt very fortunate that Tom took time just days after he had summited Mt Katahdin to attend a family reunion in early August in Pennsylvania. Tom, our sister Lynda, our mother and myself were able to spend some time together one last time. Having finished two-thirds of the AT was a moment of great pride for Tom although he wasn't boastful at all about that accomplishment. Tom was always humble about his accomplishments and very quiet. He and I didn't have that many talks as that just wasn't Tom. The one subject Tom always wanted to talk about was Alice. He loved her with all his heart and was so proud of her. He made sure to take time off the Trail to go take Alice to college or pick her up and I know he was in contact with her when he had a cell signal.
Rest in Peace brother. My deepest condolences and prayers for Alice and Eileen.
Love Dave
