Latham-Sister Beverly Marie Schickel, CSJ, (Sister Marie Colette), 76, died Friday, April 1, 2011, at St. Joseph's Provincial House, Latham. Sister Beverly had been a Sister of St. Joseph of Carondelet for the past 58 years. Sister Beverly, the former Rose Beverly Schickel, was born September 25, 1934, in Schenectady, NY, daughter of the late Frank and Mary Kristel Schickel. After graduating from St. Columba's School in Schenectady, she entered the novitiate of the Sisters of St. Joseph on March 19, 1953, and professed final vows on August 15, 1960. Sister Beverly received a bachelor's degree in education and completed her graduate studies in education and mathematics, both from The College of Saint Rose. For 26 years, Sister Beverly taught in schools in the Albany Diocese including: St. Mary's Academy, Glens Falls; St. Joseph's School, Fort Edward; St. Augustine's School, St. Patrick's School and Catholic Central High School, Troy; St. Luke's School, Schenectady; St. Columba's School, Schenectady; and St. Jude's School, Wyantskill. In addition, Sister Beverly served for 16 years as pastoral associate in St. Michael's Parish, Cohoes. When she moved to St. Joseph's Provincial House, Latham, Sister Beverly volunteered as a driver. Sister Beverly was a kind woman with a deep concern for the welfare of others. Whether she was teaching a child, visiting a parishioner and driving a sister to an appointment, she was patient and compassionate. Sister Beverly loved gardening and tended her flowers as she tended her mother, her Aunt Jul and her parishioners-with love, respect and a generous heart. An ardent sports fan, Sister Beverly enjoyed outdoor activities of all kinds but was especially fond of baseball and basketball. Especially gifted in visiting the sick and homebound, she spent many hours reaching out to others with sincerity, empathy and humor. Sister Beverly leaves to us a lasting legacy of selfless service to God's people. Sister Beverly is survived by her brother, Frank (Mary) Schickel; her brother-in-law, Rubin Willcoxon; her nieces and nephews and their families: Michael (Anne) Willcoxon; Peter (Linda) Willcoxon; Kathleen (Ahmed) Razi; Francis (Kathy) Schickel; and James (Sandra) Schickel; and the Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondelet. In addition to her parents, Sister Beverly was predeceased by her dear sister, Anna Mary Willcoxon; her beloved Aunt Jul; and by many friends in the Sisters of St. Joseph. Sister Beverly's funeral Liturgy will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, April 6, 2011 from the chapel of St. Joseph's Provincial House, Latham. Interment will be in Our Lady Queen of Virgins Cemetery on the Provincial House grounds.
