Sister Francis Denise will live forever in my memory as a wonderful person and as the one whose voice still rings in my head whenever I have a discussion about the US Constitution. She was one of our favorites at St John's Catholic Academy in Syracuse back in the 1960s. She could have us reciting the pros and cons of Jefferson's approach versus that of Hamilton. She helped us keep the 13th, 14th, and 15th Amendments in the correct order... "First you have to free the slaves. Then you have to give them citizenship. And then you have to give them the right to vote. It can't be done in any other order." Although she was in her 50s when she taught us, I remember her appearing much younger. It must have been her humor and her perfect self-control that kept her going for so long. I know she touched many young lives with her gift for teaching. Today, I have an intense love of American history, and it was she who lit the first spark. Rest well, Sister Francis. You did a superlative job!
