Fred Tibbitts, Jr. posted a condolence
Sunday, May 15, 2016
I just found this link when looking for Pong Lee SUNY-Albany Economics Dept. 1971. I am very sad that he became ill and has left us. Lee Pong was one of my favorite professors of all time. I greatly admired his teaching skills, his wisdom and friendly nature. I had him for graduate school in Macroeconomics in 1971. There were about twelve of us in the class.
As I had been out of school for two years since receiving my undergraduate degree in economics in June of 1969, some advancements in economic theory had taken place without my knowing. One day we were discussing GNP and the formulae for determining it under various scenarios. When a student answered Dr. Lee's question, I immediately raised my hand, eager to be correct about something I deemed very basic. I exclaimed that the formula was always "+ X", because we could not calculate the contribution of the average housewife. To my dismay, Dr. Lee smiled broadly, and said "Why, Mr. Tibbitts, apparently you are not aware that Dr. Samuelson has determined it to be $10,000.00?" Oh, I wished I had not been so quick to challenge the young lady student.
Lee Pong did not care what you knew, he was always intent on learning what you did not know. He inspired his students to take their studies seriously, and all the while with love. He would send three of us at a time to the chalk boards, each to write a function or formula. If your chalk stopped for more than a few seconds, he would ask "Mr. Tibbitts or Miss Smith, et. al, is there a problem?" Of course, the chances of recovering from your lack of preparation for that problem were then next to nil, so then he would say "Alright, that will be all". And then "Miss Jones et al., do you think you could help Mr. Tibbitts et al.?", calling her to the board to complete the answer.
I am sure that for his giving, caring way of life his Spirit and Soul have found a well- deserved rest, possibly before starting all over again. I will keep my eye out for a bright, young Korean student who shows great promise, and wonders about economics, should I ever be so fortunate as to meet him again. You never know.

Papa,
Grandma and the Kuos wish you a Happy Birthday!
To say that we miss you would be a severe understatement. Justin misses stealing your chair from you. He's become quite a "big boy" now although he still sucks his thumb. He must get his happy go lucky attitude from you. Erin and Megan have become quite the soccer players. They must get that from you, too. Erin loves to read while Megan tends more to math and Art.
I miss your unassuming intellect, your joy for life, and my long time golf partner. In fact you were the one who made me pick up golf. You told me if I was marrying your daughter, then I needed to learn how to play!
Amy misses you most of all! She misses sharing mystery tv shows, suspense novels and movies with you. Most of all, she misses her confidant and father.
We love you always.

Dear friend, Pong S.
Our enduring friendship goes back over 40 years, ever since you taught me how to ski at the backyard of your home. All these years, we had such a wonderful time together whenever we played together in sports, especially in golfing. I always admired your superb sportsmanship of being fair and considerate to your partners. It reflected your fine innate character. I also admired your intellect and profound knowledge, even outside your profession. You were an excellent conversationalist, a center of attention in any lively party. But most of all, you were a devoted family man. You were so proud of every member of your family, especially grandchildren. Even though it is unbelievably sad to part with old friend, I feel so blessed to have known you and my life has been so enriched by our friendship. Until we meet in another world, I will keep and cherish your memory in my heart.

Dr. Lee played a crucial role in my being able to get through the ph.d program at Albany from 1971-76. He was a kind human being who supported his students no matter what struggles they were having. I have fashioned my teaching and research career based on my experiences with Dr. Lee.
My thoughts and prayers are with his family.

I knew Pong S from the time I was about eight or nine. His son Ernie and I used to ski together while our fathers skied. Pong S. was a kind and thoughtful man. He appreciated life in a quiet, accepting way that I found very admirable. It was clear to anyone how devoted he was to his family. I can't imagine what it must feel like to lose your father or your husband. I can only say that he will be truly missed, and that his presence on earth was a positive and entirely beautiful thing. Love to Amy, Ernie, and Eunice and all the grandchildren.
Thank you, Pong S.

I would like to celebrate your life, uncle. You were more than an uncle to me. For a humble young kid, you were a role model, someone to look up to, and more importantly, a precious father-figure...
The day you were able eat comfortably was my happiest day for me as a dentist. Thank you uncle for giving me that happiness. I'll miss you a lot. I have never told you this, but I truly love you, and respect you, uncle.
