Sister Mary Margaret Singer, CSJ
Sister Mary Margaret Singer, CSJ, 81, died Sunday, December 16, 2007, at St. Josephs Provincial House, Latham. Sister Mary Margaret had been a Sister of St. Joseph of Carondelet for the past 62 years.
Sister Mary Margaret, the former Ernestine Anne Singer, was born June 25, 1926, in Syracuse, NY, daughter of the late Joseph and Alta Lively Singer. After graduating from St. Anthonys High School in Syracuse, Sister Mary Margaret entered the novitiate of the Sisters of St. Joseph in 1945. She received a bachelors degree in education and a masters degree in education, both from The College of Saint Rose. In addition, Sister Mary Margaret pursued studies in pastoral-planning management, collaborative ministry and scripture. She taught for over 40 years in schools in the Albany and Syracuse Dioceses and served as principal of St. Pius X School in Loudonville; St. Anns School, Syracuse; and Holy Trinity School, Syracuse. For the past 20 years, Sister Mary Margaret has been a pastoral associate and volunteer at Holy Trinity Parish in Syracuse.
Sister Mary Margaret was blessed with many gifts of nature and grace. Her leadership ability, intelligent wit, keen sense of humor, and deep compassion for people made her a treasure as a teacher, administrator, parish minister and friend. An energetic and enthusiastic participant in all of her endeavors, Sister Mary Margaret loved her faith, her family, her religious community and her friends. Her joy in living, her warmth and her vitality will bless generations to come.
Sister Mary Margaret is survived by her beloved sister, Marcy Singer, of Syracuse; her nieces and nephews and their families; many friends; and the Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondelet. In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her sister, Dorothy Gallagher; her brother, Joseph Singer; and many wonderful friends in the Sisters of St. Joseph.
Sister Mary Margarets funeral Liturgy will be held Wednesday, December 19, at 10:30 a.m. from the chapel of St. Josephs Provincial House, Latham. Interment will be in Our Lady Queen of Virgins Cemetery on the Provincial House grounds. Calling hours will be held at the Provincial House on Tuesday, December 18, from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. with a prayer service at 7:00 p.m. Contributions in Sister Mary Margarets memory may be made to the Development Office of the Sisters of St. Joseph, 385 Watervliet-Shaker Road, Latham, NY 12110.
