I wanted to say that you led an extraordinary life. You were so beautiful and your three children are as beautiful as you. You looked so proud in all of the pictures that I saw of you and your family. Rest in peace and I hope you get to know my sister, Karen up there as she got there just before you and knew your brother, Tom. I truly enjoyed sitting with you and getting to know you a little better some years ago when we all went to the TAE Alumni reunion and again seeing you at our joint reunion with my and your other brother, Jim's class. Enjoy Heaven and give my sister a kiss from me. Sue

My daughter, Liz, was one of your mother's students at Van Antwerp Middle School about 10 years ago. When I told Liz of her death, she was upset. She told me how much she enjoyed her class and how wonderful a teacher she was. While your mother's life was certainly cut too short, she made an impact on so many of her students. We hope that you will be comforted by all of the wonderful things that she did for so many.
Our thoughts and prayers are with you at this difficult time.

I was fortunate to teach with Sue at VA, and she was a true role model. Her leadership abilities, decision-making skills, kindness, and sense of humor were always evident, and I admired her greatly. The love and pride she felt for her children was a part of every lunchtime conversation. I hope they find solace in knowing the joy it gave her to speak of them and all the wonderful memories they shared.

I remember Susan at family gatherings as a sweet little girl with pretty blond hair. She was quiet and reserved and lady-like (even as a very small chld).
In much later years we met occasionally when our visits to our mothers in Florida coincided. She still possessed that persona of quiet strength and gentle dignity. She was always a lady. She will be missed.

To the teacher who was always around for whatever her students needed, whether it be test questions, homework questions...a teacher who always listened, and cared...and that made all the difference. I will always remember the lessons taught in Social Studies, but more importantly, the lessons she taught me in life.

Mrs. Burke will always be remembered by my son Joshua who is now a Junior in High School. He enjoyed her teaching at Van Antwerp Middle School. My son Nathan never had her, he is currently a seventh grader at VA though said he used to go into her class while waiting for his Tech class and enjoyed talking with her. I only knew Sue for a short time, while working on her 8th grade team at VA as a long term sub, but I have always remembered her kindness, patience, and understanding as being boundless. While she had trials of her own, she was always there to listen to mine and other people's as well, and seemed to understand and empathize more than anyone. I always felt better after going to her for advice or even just to vent! Everything others have written just echoes how I feel...I wish I had gotten to know her better and will remember and miss her always. My sincerest condolences.

Like all of us, I'm sure, I can only say that I wish I'd had more time with Sue. I knew her through the Civics Mosaic program, and when I was a new "fellow" she was always more than helpful and encouraging. In times with her at Williamsburg and various eateries in the Capital District, she was always the quintessential professional, colleague, and supportive friend. She shared freely of her experience and wisdom, and did so in a way that also encouraged me and made me feel that she valued and respected what I might have to contribute as well. She had the teacher's knack of affirming and bringing the best out in people. She also struck me as one who, in the midst of a full and rich professional life, didn't put off living until tomorrow, but enjoyed her life as she lived it. Sue, thank you for you for being such a supportive colleague and friend, even in the short time we knew each other, and for such a dynamic example of living well. Peace

We are so very sorry in the passing of your mom. I regret that we never had the chance to meet her. The love that she has for you and your brother and sister, and the wonderful bond that you all have, is so evident by the wonderful man that you are. I'll never forget the first time I met Momma Burke. Everyone kept telling me that momma Burke was one of the coolest people I'd ever meet. It kind of felt like I was going to meet a celebrity. I remember being introduced to her on wine night and she lived up to my exepectations. She stayed up with us all night and had us singing Journey. That was my first and fondest memory of Momma Burke.

I will always remember Sue as a person who asked important questions and also pitched in to help out wherever help was needed. She was the person who voiced what many were thinking but were reluctant to say, and I found her honesty and willingness to work to change the problems refreshing in a colleague with lots of experience. I will miss her easy smile and great sense of humor!

In humble tribute to Sue Burke, my friend and colleague:
When I first heard the news of Sue’s death I took a long, very slow walk. I took a walk because that’s what Sue and I did together, we walked. I treasured our walks because Sue represented the woman I strive to be. She was simultaneously strong and compassionate, an accomplished professional and grounded in her beliefs. I learned a lot from her on those walks. I learned how important it is to know what you want out of life, and to move directly toward it. I learned how important her children were to her, and because of her, cherished my child more. I learned what it means to really be a teacher, to care, beyond expectations, about your students. We had the chance over the course of our friendship to take walks in some pretty great places. My favorite, though, were the walks we took along the National Mall in Washington, D.C. During conferences, on hot August mornings, we would rise at 6am to walk the Mall together. Amidst the other early risers we would walk, and talk about our families, our work and our lives. I’ll never forget those walks, or the lessons I learned from Sue as we walked. In traditional China, it was customary, when saying goodbye to a friend to use the more intimate expression, “man, man zou" or “walk slowly.” It is an affectionate term, meant to bid a friend safety and wellbeing on her journey. Man, man zou, Sue, walk slowly, I will miss you.

Sue mentored me when I returned to school in 2000 to obtain a teaching master's degree at College of St. Rose. I observed her teaching 8th grade social studies at Van Antwerp School. She was a fantastic teacher, and allowed me the opportunity to not only observe, but participate in her classroom. She share so much with me! I ran into her later on when she had battled cancer, and had gone through the throes of separation and divorce. She was optimistic about her future, and still loved teaching and her children gave her such joy. I was so shocked to learn of her sudden passing, not knowing that she had been ill. What a loss! My deepest sympathy to all who knew her as mother, teacher, friend!

When Kevin and I would take our lunches together during the busy FYE holiday season, Mrs. Burke would always buy me lunch. It sounds silly, but I'll never forget how kind that was....she hardly knew me. I was a poor college student, and she didn't think twice about helping me out a little. She was a great person. If in 8th grade I had looked my social studies teacher in the eye and said, "You know what? One day, I'll dance to the backstreet boys with you and call you MaMa Burke," she probably would have sent me directly to the nurses office to get my temperature taken. Throughout my life I have encountered many people. I will ALWAYS remember MaMa Burke, because whenever she was around, she was everybody's Mama. Sue always made me smile and ALWAYS had my back. As the secretary for the Niskayuna Teachers' Association, she would often say to me after one of my 'rants', "Donna, are you sure you want to put THAT in the minutes?" And then she would clean it up and make it look "pretty" What will we do without her at that board table. Sue - you will be oh so very missed!

It really says a lot about the character of a person when they instantly become both family and friend. Sue was "Mama Burke" to all of us in the J-Crew. As Kevin's mom, she instantly became family to all of us. And her tireless spirit and zest for life was both unmistakable and infectious. She was truly a joy to be around, a good friend, and an amazing person. I raise my wine glass and dedicate my next karaoke song to you, Mama Burke. Love forever.
