Sister Marie Marce Valentine, CSJ, 97, died Friday, August 1, 2008, at St. Josephs Provincial House, Latham. Sister Marie had been a Sister of St. Joseph of Carondelet for 78 years.
Sister Marie Marce, the former Evelyn Frances Valentine, was born July 11, 2008, in Rome, NY, daughter of the late Joseph and Elizabeth Uvanni Valentine. After graduating from St. Aloysius Academy in Rome, Sister Marie entered the novitiate of the Sisters of St. Joseph on March 19, 1930, and professed final vows on August 15, 1935. She received a bachelors degree in music from The College of Saint Rose and pursued graduate studies in music at Catholic University of America. Sister Marie taught music in schools in the Albany and Syracuse Dioceses for 54 years and also served as a cook and staff member of St. Josephs Monastery in Peterborough, NH.
Sister Marie Marce was a beloved aunt, a dedicated Church woman and a faithful friend. Her love and appreciation of music and her desire to pass on that gift to future generations inspired Sister Marie to be a talented and effective teacher. Her devotion to the Church was expressed in her continual prayer and concern for seminarians and priests. Whether Sister Marie was teaching, cooking or volunteering, her service was characterized by diligence and a spirit of generosity.
In addition to her parents, Sister Marie Marce was predeceased by her brothers: Joseph, William and John Valentine; by her sister, Molven Buck; and by many friends in the Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondelet. Sister Marie is survived by her nieces: Sandra Loughran, Delores Buck and Susan Kirchhoff; by her nephew, Michael (Mary Anne) Valentine; by her dear friends, Joe and Kay Manupella; and by the Sisters of St. Joseph.
Sister Marie Marces funeral Liturgy will be held Monday, August 4, at 10:30 a.m. from the chapel of St. Josephs Provincial House, Latham. Interment will be in Our Lady Queen of Virgins Cemetery on the Provincial House grounds. Calling hours will be held at the Provincial House on Sunday, August 3, from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. with a prayer service at 7:00 p.m. Contributions in Sister Maries memory may be made to the Development Office of the Sisters of St. Joseph, 385 Watervliet-Shaker Road, Latham, NY 12110
