NICHOLAS M. MITCHELL SR.
Watervliet- Nicholas M. Mitchell Sr., 78 of Watervliet, beloved husband of Dorothy Dillon Mitchell, entered into eternal life Wednesday, June 24, 2009 at his home after a long illness.
Born in Troy, he was son of the late John E. Sr. and Margaret (Martin) Mitchell. Nick was educated in Schaghticoke and graduated from Hoosick Valley Central High School. He married his beloved Dorothy 49 years ago at St. Peter's Church in Troy. Nick proudly served his country in the U.S. Navy during the Korean War from 1948 to 1957 stationed on the USS Baltimore and the USS Thompson. He worked at Mohawk Paper Mill in Cohoes after the service from 1958-1964 in the boiler room. He worked at General Electric Silicone plant in Waterford for over 29 years as the Control Operator retiring in 1993.
He was an active member and volunteer at the Colonie Elks Lodge 2192, and the American Legion Post 1615 in Maplewood. He was a member of the U.S. Navy Cruiser Sailors Association. Nick was an avid reader and card player and loved camping with his family. He was a longtime communicant of St. Brigid's Church in Watervliet.
Survivors in addition to his wife include his children Dottie A. Mitchell of Latham, Nick (Joy) Mitchell II of Latham, and Kevin M. Mitchell of Albany. He was predeceased by his infant son J. Edward Mitchell. He was the cherished grandfather of Patrick N. Mitchell and Zachary H. Dillon Mitchell of Latham. He was the brother of William ( Judy)Mitchell of Florida. He was the brother in law of Edith Mitchell of New Hampshire, Dorothy E. Mitchell of California, Rose Mitchell of Troy, Rita Lashway of Colonie, Edward Dillon of Glenmont and Victor Arroyo of Mechanicville. He is also survived by several nieces, nephew and cousins.
Nick was predeceased by his brothers, John Mitchell, Joseph Mitchell, and Frederick Mitchell, his sisters, Tena Funking, Anita Welch, Theresa Lawrence, Mae McDonald, Helen Mitchell and Shirley Church.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Monday June 29, 2009 at 10:00 am in St. Brigid's Church 701 Fourth Avenue Watervliet.
Relatives and friends are invited and may call Sunday from 2-6 p.m. at Dufresne & Cavanaugh Funeral Home, Ltd., 149 Old Loudon Road, Latham.
Interment will be in St. Peter's Cemetery, Troy.
