Mark was a wonderful teacher. I know because I had the privilege to teach next door to him for a number of years. He taught from his heart. He inspired his students to produce their best work. In Yorkers, he motivated them to research local history. He will be missed.

Mark was one of the first people to welcome me as a rookie teacher at Hoosic Valley almost 40 years ago. He was always ready to offer a smile, a joke or friendly and helpful advice when asked. As classroom roommates for several years we had many laughs, and Mark was the first person to show me how to use a computer! He had a combination of traits that made him a wonderful teacher and colleague and friend; professional and demanding yet fun-loving, knowledgeable and hard working in class and outside of school. He was beloved by his many students and friends. I am grateful to have known and worked with him for so many years. Rest in peace Mark, you will be long remembered!

I was a bad kid in school. I didn't know how to behave. I wanted to act out. I went in Mr. Van Sluyters history class and acted bad. He put me in the back row. Most teacher put me in the front row when I acted bad, to watch me closely. He said if I didn't want to learn I could sit in the back and goof off. I never wanted to be in the front row so badly in my life. I felt like I was missing out in the back because Mr. V loved history so much and I wanted to love it too. I finally got to sit with the other kids but I had to prove I cared before he let me move up. I was so proud when he let me move up, like I climbed a mountain. Thank you Mr V for expecting more from me then I knew I could give. I moved on from his class and never forgot to give respect to my teacher because I never wanted to end up in the back again. And to Mrs. V I'll never forget you reading the Indian In The Cupboard outloud. It was the first book anyone ever took the time to read to me. After that I never stopped reading. I can see you now Mrs. V standing with that book in your hand letting us kids drift to another place. You were the power couple that not only taught children but LOVED to teach us. Your both in my In my heart forever. With much love and respect, Jane Lawrence class of 92

I am so sorry for your loss. Mr. V truly inspired me to work harder and fueled my desire to become a teacher. I even got my SSt extension as I wanted to follow in his footsteps. There are so many fond memories of Yorkers, town ball, and mischief in class. He will be missed.

My family were neighbor's of Mark and his famon College Street in Mt. Vernon, IL. Mark and I were good friends through our lives and he will be missed so very much! As another friend said, he left a hole in our hearts that only God and time can fill. Am unsure whether that vacant spot can ever be truly filled though. Mark was bigger than life it seemed in so many ways. Am so thankful to have had him in my life for as long as he lived. Nancy, you will forever be a friend, dear one. Though we met you only once when you and Mark came to our home two years ago, it seemed I knew you already! May God be with you always.

Several of Mark's friends from Mount Vernon High School would get together in October in a sort of "mini-reunion" and we were all looking forward to next year and our 50th class reunion. The lion's share of the logistics for this welcome meeting of friends was Mark's doing and reflected his giving nature and great soul. I had the honor of knowing him from when we first went off to Boy Scout camp in1962 and in our positions in Scouts for all our high school years. He was one of the nicest young men with whom I had the pleasure of growing up, and, once we had all gone our separate ways to college, it was always fun to look forward to see him back home over the Holidays. We'd often compare how we'd teach history, thereby "saving" the next generation... Mark had the mind to influence young thinkers and lovers of history, and I know he'll leave that legacy behind. So, Buddy....you DID it! You changed the world! Not too bad, if I can offer my opinion, not too bad at all! Most of all, Mark was my friend, who helped me become whatever I am, and I am grateful to God that I knew him. I and a lot of us from Mount Vernon will have a hole in our souls in the shape of that big red head, that only time and God can fill. If someone would, please tell Nancy that she will always have her "guardian angels" from Mount Vernon with her, no matter if we are all scattered. As we are bound by our bonds to Mark, so we are to Nancy, and we wouldn't have it any other way.To his brothers, sisters and family up in N.Y., we all had a blessing in this boy and man, for which I am so very grateful to God. Bless you all, and you are in so many prayers.

One of the qualities that made Mark such a powerful and positive influence on his students and all who knew him is the respect he always showed to others. I used to substitute in his classroom during his infrequent absences. At the bottom of his lesson plan would be the instruction that the sub should, at the end of each class, thank the students for being there. He loved what he did and it showed.

To Mrs. V and all of Mr. V's family,
I am so sorry for your loss, you are all in my thoughts and prayers. Mr. V was an incredible person and teacher. I was new to Hoosic Valley in 7th grade and Mr. V really helped me to become comfortable in the school. He always managed to keep his class fun and I will never forget our Yorker Trips. I would run into Mr. V every now and then in the past few years either at the Pump Station or other places around the area and we would talk for while and you could really tell how much he cared about his past students. Rest In Peace Mr. V, Tim Hepp

To the family of Mr. V, I am very sorry for your loss. Mr. V was an all around good person who is greatly missed but never forgotten!
Personally, I will never forget accidentally dozing off one day in his class and he came up besides my desk and dropped a textbook on the floor... He used to do that to any student who would do that in class! He was always one of the cooler teachers at Hoosic Valley! Forever in our hearts, RIP Mr. V!
