MARK C. VAN SLUYTERS
Newtonville- Mark C. Van Sluyters, 67, of Newtonville, NY passed away on October 24, 2015 in Mount Vernon, IL with family and friends around him.
Mark was born on November 21, 1948 in Grand Rapids, MI to the late David and Jean Van Sluyters. He attended high school at Mt. Vernon Township, IL and graduated in 1966. He then went on to earn his degree in History Education from Murray State University, KY.
Mark worked as a history teacher (grades 7-12) for Hoosic Valley Junior Senior High School, Schaghticoke, NY for 31 years, where he shared his love for history with his students through a program called Yorkers.
After retiring, he continued his devotion to history by working for the New York Historical Association and the National Museum of Racing. Mark also enjoyed travel, volleyball and cooking, where he took classes at the Culinary Institute of America, and worked for the Albany Pump Station as their Director of First Impressions.
Mark is survived his wife, Nancy (Lambert) Van Sluyters, brothers and sisters Blake (Kathleen) Van Sluyters, Paul (Bonnie) Van Sluyters, Sue (John) Welch, Mary (Jay) Kravitz, Beth (Timothy) Moakler, and nieces and nephews.
The funeral procession will meet at the Oakwood Avenue entrance to Oakwood Cemetery at 10:45 am and proceed to the graveside for a service that will take place on Saturday December 12, 2015 at 11:00 am at Oakwood Cemetery, 186 Oakwood Avenue, Troy with Fr. Geoffrey Burke officiating.
Arrangements are under the direction of Dufresne & Cavanaugh Funeral Home, 149 Old Loudon Rd., Latham, NY.
